In a quiet village that the morning sun would rise in,
Under the open sky there was a farmer.
He had a little, little hen, gentlest and brightest.
That brought him wonder each morning and night.
One day, to his great surprise,
In front of him was a golden egg.
He held it, soft, and bright,
Rejoiced heartily in his heart.
Every morning thereafter the hen laid gold,
A priceless gift that is worth more than silver and gold.
The farmer prospered, but his covetousness got the better of him,
For he wanted all the treasure in his soul.
“If one egg is gold, then”, he began to say,
Then, all that gold is certainly concealed somewhere,
Why should I wait for another each day?
I will take it all in just one way.”
However, when he was rashly active,
He lost the good luck that God had given him.
There was no longer any hen, nor was there any golden eggs,
Withholding production from the farmer.Withholding jobs from the farmer.
He sat in sorrow; regret for his greed,
He had only to be patient; patience would be all he would need.
The lesson that the golden egg gave him was true:
What blessings can destroy, greed can destroy.
So embrace what you are given and endure one day at a time,
For rushing for more can take blessings away.
When you are content and wise you will grow,
Preserve the gifts of life and treasure what is given.
