For a long time, I thought saying “no” made me a bad person.
If someone asked me for help, I felt like I had to agree. If a friend invited me somewhere and I did not have the money, I would still think twice before saying no. Sometimes, I would even agree to things I did not really want to do because I was afraid of disappointing people.
But as I grow older, I am learning something important: saying no does not make me a bad person.
The Fear of Disappointing People
One of the hardest things about saying no is worrying about how the other person will react.
You start thinking, “Will they be angry?” “Will they think I’m selfish?” “Will they stop talking to me?”
Because of this, you may end up saying yes even when you are uncomfortable.
Sometimes you agree to help someone when you are already tired. Sometimes you attend an outing when you know your bank account is begging for mercy. 😂
And sometimes you simply want to rest, but you feel guilty for choosing yourself.
You Cannot Always Be Available
I am slowly realizing that I cannot be available for everyone all the time.
As a student, there are already so many things to deal with. There are lectures, assignments, tests, practicals, personal problems and financial responsibilities.
Sometimes, I genuinely do not have the time or energy to take on someone else's problem.
That does not mean I do not care.
It simply means I am human too.
Saying No to Unnecessary Spending
Money is another area where learning to say no has become important.
There are times when friends want to hang out, eat somewhere or attend an event. Of course, it is nice to enjoy yourself, but sometimes your budget says something completely different.
I have learned that I do not have to spend money I cannot afford just because everyone else is doing it.
I can simply say, “I can't make it this time.”
And honestly, that is okay.
Not Every Request Needs a Yes
Sometimes people ask for things because they know you usually agree.
They may ask to borrow something, ask for money, ask you to do their work or expect you to always be available.
Being kind is a good thing, but kindness should not mean constantly putting yourself in uncomfortable situations.
You are allowed to have limits.
You are allowed to say, “I can't do that.”
And you do not always need a long explanation.
Learning to Put Myself First Sometimes
Putting yourself first does not mean you do not care about other people.
There is a difference between being selfish and taking care of yourself.
If you are constantly helping everyone while ignoring your own needs, eventually you will become exhausted and frustrated.
I am learning that protecting my time, money, energy and peace is also important.
I can love people and still have boundaries.
The Right People Will Understand
Another thing I am learning is that the right people will not hate me simply because I said no.
True friends should be able to understand that you have your own responsibilities and limitations.
If someone only values you when you are useful to them, then maybe the problem is not your “no.”
Maybe they were only comfortable with your “yes.”
No Doesn't Mean I Don't Care
I am still learning how to say no without feeling guilty.
Sometimes it is uncomfortable. Sometimes I still overthink it afterwards.
But I am getting better.
I am learning that I do not have to explain every decision, attend every outing, solve every problem or make everyone happy.
Saying no does not make me a bad person.
Sometimes, it simply means I am finally learning to respect myself too. ❤️
