THE BOY WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING
Chapter Four — The Secret Behind His Smile
Amara arrived at Rosewood Academy earlier than usual on Wednesday morning.
She had barely slept.
The photograph she had received the previous night was still saved on her phone. She had looked at it so many times that she could almost remember every detail.
Daniel stood beside the mysterious man outside what appeared to be a large building. The man's hand rested on Daniel's shoulder, but Daniel wasn't smiling. Instead, he looked angry, as though someone had forced him to be there.
Underneath the photograph were the words:
Ask Daniel who this man is.
And ask him why he came to Rosewood Academy.
Amara had typed several messages to Daniel during the night, but she had deleted every single one before sending them.
She didn't want him to think she was suspicious of him.
But how could she ignore something like that?
"You're going to break your phone if you keep staring at it."
Amara nearly jumped out of her skin.
Tessa stood behind her, holding a bottle of juice and a packet of biscuits.
"Good morning to you too," Amara muttered.
Tessa sat beside her on the low wall near the school garden.
"Now tell me what's wrong."
"Nothing."
"Amara."
"What?"
"I've known you for years. You have that look on your face."
"What look?"
"The look you get when something is bothering you, but you don't want to tell me because you think you can solve it yourself."
Amara sighed.
Sometimes, having a best friend who knew you too well was exhausting.
She unlocked her phone and showed Tessa the photograph.
Tessa's smile disappeared.
"Who is that man?"
"That's what I'm trying to find out."
"Does Daniel know you've received this?"
"Not yet."
Tessa examined the picture again.
"Amara, this is becoming serious."
"I know."
"What if whoever is sending these messages is trying to set Daniel up?"
"I thought about that."
"Then what if the person is telling the truth?"
Amara looked at her friend.
"That's what scares me."
Tessa was quiet for a moment.
Then she reached for Amara's hand.
"Whatever happens, promise me you won't let yourself get into trouble because of a boy you've only known for a few days."
Amara looked away.
"I promise I'll be careful."
It wasn't exactly the promise Tessa wanted.
But it was the only one Amara could make.
Because somewhere between Daniel's quiet smiles, his mysterious past, and the way he looked at her when he thought nobody was watching, Amara had started caring about him.
And that was precisely what frightened her.
She barely knew him.
Yet the thought of discovering something terrible about him made her heart feel strangely heavy.
THE GIRL WHO WANTED DANIEL
Across the school courtyard, a girl watched Amara and Tessa from the steps of the administration building.
Her name was Vanessa Cole.
Vanessa was seventeen, beautiful, intelligent, and accustomed to getting what she wanted.
She was also one of the most influential girls at Rosewood Academy.
Her father owned several businesses in the city, and her mother was a well-known businesswoman. Vanessa had grown up surrounded by expensive clothes, private parties, and people who rarely told her no.
At Rosewood Academy, she was used to being the center of attention.
When she heard that a handsome new student had transferred into their class, she had immediately taken an interest.
But there was one problem.
Daniel Carter barely acknowledged her existence.
The previous afternoon, Vanessa had approached him after class and offered to show him around the school.
He had politely declined.
She wasn't accustomed to rejection.
And she certainly wasn't accustomed to watching a quiet girl like Amara receive the attention she wanted.
Vanessa folded her arms as she watched Amara put her phone away.
"What's so special about her?" she muttered.
Her friend, Chloe, followed her gaze.
"Who?"
"Amara Williams."
Chloe laughed.
"Why are you worried about Amara?"
"I'm not worried about her."
"Then why have you been staring at her for the past five minutes?"
Vanessa shot her a look.
Chloe raised both hands.
"Okay, okay. I'm just asking."
Vanessa turned away.
"I want to know why Daniel keeps talking to her."
Chloe grinned.
"Oh, this is interesting."
"What's interesting?"
"You like him."
Vanessa scoffed.
"Please. I've barely spoken to him."
"That's never stopped you before."
Vanessa ignored her.
But as she watched Daniel walk through the school gate, she made a decision.
If Amara thought she could become special to Daniel Carter simply because he had smiled at her a few times, she was about to discover how complicated life at Rosewood Academy could be.
Vanessa wasn't going to sit back and watch another girl take what she wanted.
THE QUESTION DANIEL COULDN'T ANSWER
By eight o'clock, the school corridors were crowded.
Amara stood beside her locker, arranging her books, when she heard a familiar voice.
"Good morning."
She turned.
Daniel stood a few feet away, wearing his usual navy uniform and carrying his black backpack.
For a moment, she forgot about the photograph.
"Good morning."
He smiled.
"You're early today."
"So are you."
"I couldn't sleep."
Amara looked at him.
"Neither could I."
Something changed in his expression.
"Why?"
She hesitated.
Then she decided she was tired of pretending everything was normal.
"Because of what happened yesterday."
Daniel's smile faded.
"The man outside the school?"
"Yes."
He looked down the corridor.
"Amara, I told you I'd explain when I could."
"And I'm trying to be patient, Daniel. But someone keeps sending me messages about you."
His eyes widened slightly.
"More messages?"
Amara nodded.
She unlocked her phone and showed him the photograph.
Daniel stared at it.
For several seconds, he didn't move.
Then he took a slow breath.
"Where did you get this?"
"Someone sent it to me."
"Who?"
"I don't know. The number is hidden."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Unbelievable."
"Who is he?"
Daniel handed her phone back.
"His name is Richard Carter."
Amara waited.
"And?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"He's my father."
Amara blinked.
"Your father?"
"Yes."
She looked at the photograph again.
"But why would someone send me a picture of your father?"
"Because they want you asking questions."
"Well, it's working."
Despite the tension, Daniel almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Amara asked the question that had been troubling her since the previous night.
"Why did you come to Rosewood Academy?"
Daniel went quiet.
Students passed them in the corridor, laughing and talking, but neither of them paid attention.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
"My father wanted me to attend a different school."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because I refused."
"Why?"
He looked at her for a long moment.
"Because I wanted to get away from my family."
Amara's expression softened.
"What happened?"
Daniel leaned against the lockers.
"My father and I have never agreed about my future. He thinks he can decide everything for me. Which school I attend, the friends I make, the career I choose. Everything."
"That sounds difficult."
"You have no idea."
He paused.
"Last year, I discovered something about him. Something that changed the way I saw my entire family."
Amara's curiosity grew.
"What did you discover?"
Before Daniel could answer, the warning bell rang.
He straightened.
"I have to go."
"Daniel!"
He stopped.
"Will you tell me?"
He looked at her.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Soon. I promise."
He walked away before she could ask another question.
Amara remained beside her locker.
His father was involved.
Daniel was hiding something about his family.
And someone knew enough about the situation to send her photographs.
The mystery was becoming more complicated by the minute.
JASON'S JEALOUSY
The first two lessons passed slowly.
Amara tried to concentrate, but her thoughts kept returning to Daniel.
During English, she caught herself looking at him several times.
He sat behind her, writing notes quietly.
Whenever she turned around, he seemed perfectly ordinary.
How could someone who looked so calm carry so many secrets?
At the end of the lesson, their teacher announced that the class would have a short break before mathematics.
Amara was putting her books away when Jason approached.
"Can we talk?"
She looked up.
"About what?"
"Daniel."
Amara closed her notebook.
"Jason, why are you so interested in him?"
"Because you're spending too much time with him."
She stared at him.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"Jason, he's my classmate."
"And I'm your friend."
"Exactly. My friend. So why are you acting like you have the right to decide who I talk to?"
Jason's expression changed.
For a moment, he looked hurt.
Then he took a breath.
"Because I care about you, Amara."
The words caught her off guard.
She had suspected Jason liked her, but hearing him say it directly was different.
"Jason..."
"I know you probably don't see me that way," he continued. "But I've liked you for a long time."
Amara didn't know what to say.
Jason laughed bitterly.
"You don't have to answer. I can already see it on your face."
"That's not fair."
"What's not fair?"
"You're expecting me to have an answer just because you've told me how you feel."
Jason looked away.
"Forget it."
He turned to leave.
"Jason, wait."
He stopped but didn't turn around.
"I don't want us to stop being friends."
He was silent for a moment.
Then he looked back at her.
"Neither do I."
His voice softened.
"But I can't pretend I'm happy watching you fall for another guy."
Amara's heart sank.
"Jason, I haven't—"
"Maybe not yet."
He walked away.
Amara stood alone beside her desk.
She had never wanted to hurt Jason.
He was kind, funny, and had been part of her life for years.
But she couldn't force herself to feel something she didn't feel.
And the truth was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Whenever Daniel smiled at her, she felt something she had never experienced with Jason.
Something unexpected.
Something she wasn't ready to name.
THE NOTE IN HER LOCKER
At lunchtime, Amara decided to visit the library.
She needed somewhere quiet to think.
Tessa had gone to the cafeteria with Chloe, leaving Amara alone to sort through the thoughts filling her head.
She was halfway down the corridor when she remembered she had left her mathematics notebook inside her locker.
Turning back, she hurried toward the lockers.
She opened hers.
A folded piece of paper slipped out and landed at her feet.
Amara frowned.
She picked it up.
Her name was written across the front.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a short message.
If you want to know the truth about Daniel Carter, meet me behind the old auditorium after school.
Underneath, someone had written:
Come alone.
Amara read the note twice.
Then a third time.
Her first instinct was to show Tessa.
Her second was to find Daniel.
But curiosity held her in place.
Whoever had written the note knew something.
Something they believed would change her opinion of Daniel.
She turned the paper over.
There was one final sentence.
Ask him what happened to Isabella.
Amara's breath caught.
Isabella?
Who was Isabella?
She had never heard Daniel mention that name.
She folded the note and slipped it into her bag.
For the rest of lunch, she barely touched her food.
THE NAME HE NEVER WANTED TO HEAR
The afternoon seemed to crawl.
Amara glanced at the clock repeatedly, wondering whether she should tell someone about the note.
By the final lesson, she had almost convinced herself to ignore it.
Then Daniel passed her a piece of paper.
She unfolded it beneath her desk.
Are you okay? You've been quiet all day.
Amara stared at the message.
She wanted to ask him about Isabella.
She wanted to know everything.
Instead, she wrote:
Can we talk after school? Somewhere private?
Daniel read the note.
He looked at her.
Then he nodded.
When the final bell rang, Amara packed her books and waited near the classroom door.
Daniel approached.
"What's going on?"
Amara looked around.
"Someone left me a note."
Daniel's expression immediately changed.
"What did it say?"
She hesitated.
Then she handed it to him.
He read it.
The moment his eyes reached the name at the bottom, all the color seemed to drain from his face.
"Where did you get this?"
"In my locker."
Daniel read the sentence again.
Ask him what happened to Isabella.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"Daniel?"
He didn't respond.
"Who is Isabella?"
He closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, the sadness in his expression startled her.
"Isabella was my best friend."
Amara waited.
"What happened to her?"
Daniel looked away.
"She disappeared from my life last year."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that one day, she was there, and the next day, everything changed. She stopped answering my calls. She left school. Nobody would tell me where she had gone."
"Did you argue?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not that I knew of."
"Then why would someone write this?"
"Because Isabella knew something about my father."
Amara's stomach tightened.
"What kind of thing?"
Daniel looked at her.
"That's what I've been trying to find out."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel took a step back.
"Amara, I need you to promise me something."
"What?"
"Don't go looking for Isabella."
"But—"
"Please."
His voice was so serious that she stopped.
"I don't want you getting caught up in this."
Amara studied his face.
"Daniel, someone is sending me these messages. I'm already caught up in it."
He looked as though he wanted to argue.
Instead, he lowered his voice.
"Then promise me you'll be careful."
Amara nodded.
"I promise."
But neither of them knew that someone had been watching their conversation from the other end of the corridor.
Someone who had heard every word.
Someone who knew exactly who Isabella was.
And someone who had no intention of allowing Amara to uncover the truth.
A GIRL WITH A SECRET
That evening, Vanessa sat in her bedroom, scrolling through her phone.
Her room was decorated with white furniture, soft pink cushions, and photographs from parties and holidays.
On her desk sat a pile of schoolbooks she had barely touched.
Her phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
Did you give her the note?
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Then she typed:
Yes.
The reply came almost immediately.
Good. What did she do?
Vanessa leaned back against her chair.
She talked to Daniel. He looked worried when he saw the name.
A few seconds passed.
Then another message arrived.
Don't let her get any closer to him.
Vanessa frowned.
She had agreed to help because she thought Daniel was hiding something interesting.
She hadn't expected things to become this complicated.
She typed:
Why? What's so special about Isabella?
This time, the reply took longer.
When it finally came, Vanessa sat upright.
Because Isabella knows what Daniel's father did.
Vanessa read the sentence several times.
Then she typed:
What did he do?
The response appeared.
Something that could destroy the Carter family.
Vanessa's fingers went still.
For the first time since she had agreed to help, she felt a little afraid.
She had wanted to make Amara jealous.
She had wanted Daniel to notice her.
She hadn't intended to become involved in a secret that could ruin an entire family.
Another message arrived.
Remember your promise. Don't tell anyone.
Vanessa locked her phone.
She walked to the window and stared out at the evening sky.
She could still back out.
She could tell Amara everything.
She could pretend none of this had happened.
But then she thought about Daniel.
The way he smiled at Amara.
The way he looked at her as if she were the only person in the room.
Vanessa's jealousy returned.
"No," she whispered.
She wasn't going to let Amara win.
Not this time.
THE MESSAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
At nine fifteen that night, Amara sat on her bed with her homework spread across her blanket.
She had barely completed two questions.
Her mind was occupied with Daniel, Isabella, and the mysterious man who claimed to be Daniel's father.
She picked up her phone.
For several minutes, she considered messaging Daniel.
Finally, she typed:
I'm sorry about what happened today. I hope you're okay.
She sent it.
A minute later, he replied.
I'm fine. Thank you for caring.
Amara smiled faintly.
Then another message arrived.
There's something else I need to tell you.
Her smile disappeared.
She typed quickly.
What is it?
Daniel's response came after a short pause.
The reason I transferred to Rosewood Academy wasn't just because of my father.
Amara sat upright.
Then why?
The typing indicator appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Finally, his message arrived.
Because I believe Isabella might be here.
Amara stared at the screen.
Her heart began beating faster.
At Rosewood Academy?
Daniel replied.
Yes.
Before Amara could type another question, her phone rang.
An unknown number.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a girl's voice whispered,
"Amara?"
"Who is this?"
The voice trembled.
"Listen to me carefully. You need to stop asking questions about Daniel."
Amara sat up straighter.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Isabella."
Amara froze.
The girl continued hurriedly.
"I don't have much time. Daniel doesn't know the whole truth about his father."
Amara's mouth went dry.
"What truth?"
There was a faint noise on the other end of the call.
Then Isabella whispered six words that made Amara's blood run cold.
"His father is looking for me."
The call suddenly disconnected.
Amara stared at her phone.
She immediately tried calling back.
The number was unavailable.
Her phone buzzed again.
A message from Daniel appeared.
Amara, whatever happens tomorrow, don't trust anyone who tells you they know Isabella.
Amara looked from Daniel's message to the call history.
Someone was lying.
Someone was telling the truth.
And she had no idea which person she should believe.
Outside her window, a car slowly passed her house.
It continued down the road.
Then, unexpectedly, its headlights went dark.
Amara moved toward the window and peered through the curtains.
She couldn't see the driver.
She couldn't even tell whether anyone was inside.
But she suddenly remembered the last thing Isabella had said.
His father is looking for me.
Amara stepped away from the window.
For the first time, she wished she had never opened that first message.
Because tomorrow at Rosewood Academy, she would face Daniel again.
And this time, she wouldn't just be asking about his past.
She would be asking whether the boy she was beginning to fall for had been telling her the truth.
To be continued.......
