THE CHAIR OF TRUTH

A Five-Chapter Moral Story | Written by Joanna Mark

Chapter One: The Boy Who Loved Playing Tricks

Once upon a time, in a peaceful village called Greenfield, there lived a young boy named Samuel. He was clever, energetic, and full of mischief, but he had one terrible habit: he loved playing tricks on people and making them suffer.

Samuel lived with his mother, Rachel, a hardworking woman who earned a living by cleaning houses for wealthy families. She taught her son to respect others, tell the truth, and treat everyone with kindness, regardless of their wealth or social status.

Unfortunately, Samuel rarely listened to her advice.

One morning, Samuel went to school and decided to play a prank on his teacher. He secretly placed a frog inside her handbag. When the teacher opened the bag, the frog jumped out, frightening everyone in the classroom.

The students burst into laughter.

"Samuel, was this your doing?" the teacher asked sternly.

Samuel stood up and smiled. "No, ma'am. I don't know anything about it."

The teacher knew he was lying, but Samuel refused to confess.

"Samuel," she said sadly, "a person who makes lying a habit will eventually lose the trust of everyone around him. You may escape punishment today, but you cannot escape the consequences of your choices forever."

Samuel rolled his eyes.

"That is just a story adults tell children to frighten them," he replied.

After school, Samuel continued his mischief. He stole money from his classmates, mocked poor children, and deceived people whenever it benefited him.

As the years passed, his behaviour became worse. He grew into a young man who believed that he could do anything he wanted without facing consequences.

One evening, his mother sat beside him.

"My son, I am afraid for your future. You cannot continue living this way. One day, your own actions may bring you great sorrow."

Samuel stood up angrily.

"Mother, stop worrying! I know how to take care of myself."

He walked away, leaving his mother in tears.

Neither of them knew that Samuel was about to discover something that would change his life forever.

 Chapter Two: The Mysterious Chair

One Saturday morning, the headteacher announced that the school would be renovated. While cleaning an old storeroom, some workers discovered a strange wooden chair covered in dust.

The chair looked ancient. Beautiful carvings decorated its arms, and a mysterious inscription was engraved beneath its seat.

The headteacher called the teachers and students to examine it.

One teacher carefully cleaned the inscription and read it aloud:

"THE CHAIR OF TRUTH: Whoever sits upon this chair must face the truth about their actions. No lie can hide forever, and no wrong can be made right without an honest heart."

The students whispered among themselves.

"Is it really magical?" one boy asked.

"Perhaps it is only an old story," another replied.

Samuel laughed.

"This is nonsense! A chair is just a chair. It cannot reveal anybody's secrets."

To prove his point, he sat down confidently.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Samuel laughed louder.

"See? I told you!"

He stood up and walked away.

However, later that afternoon, Samuel returned to the classroom alone. He had remembered the money he had stolen from another student and wondered whether the chair could actually reveal his secret.

He sat down again.

Suddenly, the room grew silent. A strange light appeared around the chair, and Samuel heard a voice—not the voice of a witch, but a mysterious voice that seemed to come from within his own conscience.

"Samuel, do you remember the money you stole from your classmate?"

Samuel jumped to his feet.

"Who said that?"

The voice continued.

"Do you remember the lies you told your teacher? Do you remember the poor people you mocked and the promises you broke?"

Images of his past actions flashed through his mind.

Samuel covered his ears.

"Stop! I don't want to hear this!"

But the voice spoke one final time.

"You may deceive people, Samuel, but you cannot build a peaceful life upon dishonesty. The truth you refuse to face today may become the burden you carry tomorrow."

The light disappeared.

Samuel ran out of the classroom, frightened and confused.

That night, he could not sleep. For the first time, he began to wonder whether his mother and teacher had been right all along.

Yet his pride prevented him from admitting his mistakes.

He decided that he would never sit on the chair again.

But the Chair of Truth was not finished with him.

Chapter Three: The Proud Man and His Secret

Several years later, a wealthy businessman named Simon arrived in Greenfield. He owned several shops and houses and was admired by many people because of his riches.

However, Simon had a terrible character. He cheated his business partners, refused to pay some of his workers, and used his wealth to intimidate anyone who challenged him.

One day, Simon visited the school to donate books and furniture. While walking through the old storeroom, he discovered the Chair of Truth.

He admired its beautiful carvings.

"This chair would look wonderful in my office," he said.

The headteacher explained its history and warned him not to remove it.

Simon laughed.

"You expect an educated man like me to believe that a chair can expose people's secrets?"

Without permission, he ordered his workers to carry it to his mansion.

That evening, Simon placed the chair in his private office. He invited several friends to admire it and announced that he would prove the story was foolish.

"Let us see what this chair has to say about a successful man like me!"

He sat down proudly.

At first, nothing happened.

Simon smiled triumphantly.

But then the room became strangely quiet.

The familiar voice spoke.

"Simon, do you remember the workers whose wages you refused to pay?"

His smile disappeared.

"Do you remember the business partner you cheated by hiding the true value of your company?"

Simon shifted uncomfortably.

"And do you remember the poor widow whose land you acquired through deception?"

Simon sprang from the chair.

"Who is responsible for this ridiculous trick?"

His friends stared at him.

"Simon, what are you talking about?" one asked.

Simon tried to laugh, but his voice trembled.

"Nothing! This chair is useless."

He ordered everyone out of the office.

Later that night, he returned alone and sat on the chair again.

This time, the voice asked him a question that shook him deeply.

"If you have done nothing wrong, why are you afraid of the truth?"

Simon could not answer.

He had spent years convincing himself that wealth made him untouchable. Now, alone in his office, he realised that the money he had accumulated could not silence his conscience.

For the first time, Simon felt ashamed.

But shame alone would not repair the damage he had caused.

He would have to decide whether he was willing to change.

Chapter Four: The Truth Comes to Light

The following morning, Simon summoned his accountant and ordered him to bring every record of the company's transactions.

For hours, Simon examined the documents. He discovered the names of workers he had underpaid, partners he had deceived, and families who had suffered because of his dishonesty.

His accountant looked surprised.

"Sir, why are you reviewing these old records?"

Simon lowered his head.

"Because I have spent too many years pretending that money is more important than people."

He instructed his accountant to calculate the unpaid wages and the money owed to his former business partners.

However, when the total amount was presented, Simon became frightened.

It was a large sum.

"If I repay everyone, I will lose a considerable amount of my wealth," he said.

His accountant replied carefully, "Sir, the question is not how much you will lose. The question is whether you are willing to correct what you did wrong."

Those words reminded Simon of the Chair of Truth.

That afternoon, he visited the widow whose land he had taken unfairly.

When she saw him approaching, she became afraid.

"Have you come to take something else from me?" she asked.

Simon knelt before her.

"No. I have come to confess my wrongdoing. I took your land unfairly, and I am deeply sorry. I want to return it to you."

The widow stared at him in disbelief.

For years, she had prayed for justice, but she had never imagined that Simon would admit his wrongdoing.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I cannot pretend that your actions did not hurt me," she said. "But I am glad that you have finally chosen to tell the truth."

Simon returned the land and began compensating the other people he had cheated.

News of his actions spread throughout Greenfield.

Some people praised him, while others remained suspicious.

They wondered whether he had truly changed or was simply trying to protect his reputation.

Simon understood their doubts.

"I do not expect everyone to trust me immediately," he told them. "I know that my actions destroyed their trust. I must prove through my behaviour that I am becoming a better person."

Meanwhile, Samuel, who had become an adult, heard about Simon's transformation.

Curious, he returned to the school and found the Chair of Truth still standing in the old classroom.

He remembered the tricks he had played, the lies he had told, and the pain he had caused.

He sat down.

This time, he did not hear a frightening voice.

Instead, he began to remember his mother's tears and his teacher's warnings.

He realised that the greatest punishment was not the fear he had experienced in the classroom. It was the knowledge that he had repeatedly hurt people who had trusted him.

Samuel stood up with tears in his eyes.

"I have wasted so many years," he whispered. "But perhaps it is not too late to change."

He decided to find the people he had wronged and ask for their forgiveness.

Chapter Five: The Greatest Lesson of All

Weeks passed, and both Simon and Samuel began rebuilding their lives.

Simon paid his workers what he owed them, returned what he had taken unfairly, and established a small fund to support struggling families in Greenfield.

Samuel visited his former classmates and apologised for his cruel behaviour. He also asked his mother to forgive him for the pain he had caused her.

Rachel embraced her son.

"My child, I have prayed for this day for many years," she said. "I am happy that you are finally willing to take responsibility for your actions."

Samuel held his mother tightly.

"Mother, I thought being clever meant knowing how to escape trouble. Now I understand that true wisdom means knowing what is right and having the courage to do it."

One Sunday morning, the villagers gathered at the school for a special community meeting. Simon and Samuel stood before everyone and shared their experiences.

Simon spoke first.

"I believed that money could protect me from every consequence. I was wrong. Wealth without honesty can destroy a person's character."

Samuel followed.

"I believed that I could lie, deceive, and hurt others without consequences. I was wrong too. The truth may be uncomfortable, but refusing to face it only makes matters worse."

The headteacher listened carefully before speaking.

"The Chair of Truth did not make these men good. It gave them an opportunity to confront what they had been refusing to acknowledge. The real change came when they accepted responsibility and began making things right."

She turned to the students.

"Remember, you do not need to wait for a mysterious chair before you choose honesty. You can tell the truth today. You can apologise today. You can stop hurting others today."

The villagers applauded.

From that day forward, the Chair of Truth remained in the school as a symbol of honesty, responsibility, and the courage to change.

Samuel became a respected teacher who encouraged children to use their intelligence wisely. Simon became known not merely for his wealth but for his efforts to treat people fairly.

Their past mistakes were never erased, but their future choices became different.

And whenever a student was tempted to lie or cheat, the headteacher would point to the old wooden chair and ask:

"If the Chair of Truth could speak to you today, what would it reveal about your heart?"

The classroom would become silent.

And the students would remember that the most important truth was not what the chair revealed about them, but what they chose to do after facing it.

The End.

Moral of the Story

* Honesty is more valuable than wealth or power.

* Every action has consequences.

* True repentance involves correcting our wrongs, not merely saying sorry.

* Trust takes time to rebuild.

* It is never too late to choose a better path.

Biblical lesson: Galatians 6:7 reminds us that we reap what we sow. Proverbs 28:13 teaches that those who confess and forsake their sins find mercy.
