Why Do We Keep Watching Movies We Already Know the Ending To?

Why Do We Keep Watching Movies We Already Know the Ending To?

Why Do We Keep Watching Movies We Already Know the Ending To?

Have you ever opened Netflix, searched through several movies, rejected almost everything, and then somehow ended up watching a movie you've already watched three times?

You know the story.

You know who will fall in love.

You know who will betray who.

You even know that one character is about to make a very bad decision.

Yet you are still sitting there with your phone in your hand, watching.

And somehow, it still feels good.

I used to think this was just me being lazy about choosing a new movie.

Apparently, it is much more interesting than that.

Sometimes, we don't want a surprise

Think about how you feel after a long, stressful day.

You don't always want something complicated.

Sometimes you want that movie where you already know what is going to happen.

You don't have to study the characters.

You don't have to keep wondering who the villain is.

You don't have to prepare yourself for a shocking ending.

You already know.

And there is something comforting about that.

Life gives us enough unexpected moments.

A phone call you weren't expecting.

An exam result.

A bill you forgot about.

A message that changes your mood.

A conversation that doesn't go the way you planned.

Then you come home and watch a movie where, for the next two hours, nothing surprises you.

Maybe that is part of the attraction.

The funny thing about old movies

Sometimes, we don't even watch the whole thing.

We skip to our favourite part.

You know that scene.

The one you've watched so many times that you can almost say the dialogue before the actor does.

You laugh at the same joke.

You get emotional at the same scene.

You still complain about the same character.

And somehow, it never gets completely boring.

Maybe because we are not watching only the movie anymore.

We are remembering ourselves.

You remember where you were the first time you watched it.

Maybe you watched it in your hostel with friends.

Maybe you were younger.

Maybe you watched it with your siblings.

Maybe it reminds you of a particular period of your life.

Suddenly, the movie is carrying memories that have nothing to do with the actual storyline.

Entertainment is sometimes emotional

We often talk about movies and music as though entertainment is simply something we consume when we have free time.

But think about how quickly a song can change your mood.

One song comes on and suddenly you remember somebody.

Another takes you back to secondary school.

A particular movie reminds you of a friend you haven't spoken to in years.

A comedy makes you laugh when you weren't even in the mood to smile.

A sad movie somehow gives you permission to cry about something completely different.

That is the strange power of entertainment.

Sometimes, it gives our emotions somewhere to go.

And yes, sometimes we just want to escape

Let's be honest.

Not every movie needs to teach us a lesson.

Sometimes I just want to watch something silly.

Sometimes I don't want a deep message about life.

I don't want to analyse the character development.

I don't want to ask what the director was trying to communicate.

I just want to laugh.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

Entertainment can simply be entertainment.

The problem only begins when entertainment becomes the only way we know how to spend our time.

There is a difference between watching a movie to relax and spending every free moment escaping from real life.

One refreshes you.

The other can quietly become avoidance.

So why do we rewatch?

Maybe because familiar stories give us something new stories sometimes cannot:

comfort.

We know how they end.

We know what to expect.

And for a little while, we don't have to figure everything out.

We can just sit back and enjoy the story.

So the next time someone catches you watching the same movie for the fifth time, don't be too quick to defend yourself.

Maybe you are not bored.

Maybe you simply found a story that still feels like home.

And honestly?

Sometimes, after everything life throws at us, a familiar story, a comfortable seat and a good laugh are enough for one evening.
