SPIRITUALS

SPIRITUALS

There are things in life that the eyes cannot see, the hands cannot touch, and science cannot always explain. Yet, for many people, these unseen realities are as real as the air they breathe. This is where the idea of the spiritual realm begins—a world beyond what the physical eye can perceive, but one that religious faith teaches can influence the physical world.

The thought of a spiritual realm can be frightening. It can make a person wonder: What is happening around me that I cannot see? What battles are being fought beyond my understanding? Are there forces working for or against me? These questions are not always easy to answer, but they remind us that life may be deeper than what appears on the surface.

The Bible presents the spiritual realm as a reality rather than a fantasy. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” This scripture paints a picture of a battle that is not merely physical. It suggests that there are spiritual forces at work, and that human beings can sometimes experience the effects of battles they cannot physically observe.

This is what makes the spiritual realm both fascinating and frightening.

Sometimes, a person may experience unusual fear, persistent discouragement, confusion, temptation, or a sudden loss of peace and wonder whether something deeper is happening. Religious teachings often encourage believers to respond not with panic, but with prayer, wisdom, faith, and discernment.

However, spiritual awareness should not become spiritual fear.

There is a difference between understanding that spiritual matters exist and becoming terrified of everything that seems unusual. Not every bad dream is a spiritual attack. Not every difficult season is evidence of an evil force. Not every unfortunate event has a mysterious spiritual explanation. Sometimes life is simply difficult, and sometimes human choices have natural consequences.

This distinction is important because fear can become its own prison.

A person who constantly expects danger from the unseen may begin to see threats everywhere. They may become suspicious of friends, frightened by ordinary experiences, or convinced that every problem has a supernatural cause. Faith, however, should not make a person live in constant terror. True faith should produce courage, wisdom, and peace.

The spiritual realm, according to Christianity, contains both conflict and protection. Angels are presented in Scripture as servants of God, while evil spiritual forces are portrayed as opposing God's purposes. Yet the central message of Christianity is not that believers should spend their lives being fascinated by darkness. The focus should remain on God.

Psalm 23:4 captures this beautifully: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.” Notice the emphasis—not that the valley does not exist, but that God's presence is greater than the fear surrounding it.

That is the heart of spiritual courage.

Sometimes the greatest spiritual scare is not discovering that unseen things may exist; it is realizing how easily fear can control the human mind. Fear can make people forget their faith. It can make them focus so intensely on darkness that they stop looking toward the light.

Spiritual maturity therefore requires discernment. It means knowing when to pray, when to seek wise counsel, when to remain calm, and when to address a problem practically. Prayer and faith should not replace wisdom or responsible action. Instead, they can work alongside them.
