Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus and Pedro Proença Set for Crucial Meeting in Denmark

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to meet Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença in Denmark as questions continue to surround the captain’s role with the national team.

According to reports from Portuguese outlet Record, the meeting is expected to address Ronaldo’s position within Jesus’ plans and provide clarity over his importance to Portugal going forward. Proença has travelled to Copenhagen as the national team prepares for its UEFA Nations League meeting with Denmark.

The situation follows an unusual night for Ronaldo during Portugal’s recent 2-1 victory over Norway. The 41-year-old forward remained on the substitutes’ bench for the entire match despite being fit and warming up during the game.

Ronaldo’s failure to make an appearance attracted significant attention because Jesus had reportedly indicated before the match that the veteran forward would receive playing time. Reports say the plan was eventually for Ronaldo to feature for around 30 minutes, but the manager changed his decision during the match.

Jesus explained after the victory that the circumstances of the match influenced his decision. The Portugal coach said the game demanded different qualities and insisted that Ronaldo’s omission was not due to concerns about his physical condition.

The decision appeared to leave Ronaldo disappointed. After the final whistle in Oslo, the Portugal captain did not remain with his teammates to thank the travelling supporters, prompting further questions about his reaction to the situation. Jesus subsequently said he would speak with Ronaldo about what happened.

The tension was followed by another development during Portugal’s preparations for the Denmark match. Ronaldo travelled with the squad to the training venue in Malmö but did not participate in the group session. The Portuguese Football Federation explained that he instead completed an individual gym session at the team hotel because the required equipment was not available at the stadium.

Despite the official explanation, the timing of Ronaldo’s individual training attracted considerable attention, particularly because it came immediately after his unused-substitute appearance against Norway. Reports have subsequently indicated that Proença changed his original plans and travelled to Copenhagen to help address the situation surrounding the captain and the head coach.

Ronaldo’s continued involvement with Portugal is particularly significant because he recently reaffirmed his commitment to the national team. Earlier in September, he said he wanted to continue contributing under Jesus and also spoke about his ambition to help Portugal compete for another Nations League title while pursuing the milestone of 1,000 career goals.

The upcoming meeting therefore comes at an important moment for all three parties. Ronaldo reportedly wants assurances about his place in Portugal’s plans, while Jesus must balance the captain’s experience with his own tactical decisions as he begins a new chapter with the national team.

Portugal will face Denmark in Copenhagen on Thursday, with the match providing another opportunity for Jesus to decide how he intends to use Ronaldo. The veteran forward’s response, and whether he returns to the starting lineup, will be closely watched.

For now, the focus is on finding clarity and maintaining unity within the Portugal camp. Ronaldo remains one of the most experienced figures in international football, while Jesus is responsible for making the sporting decisions. Their meeting with Proença could therefore help establish a clearer understanding of Ronaldo’s role as Portugal continues its Nations League campaign.
