YOUR BRAIN IS HUNGRY… AND YOU MIGHT BE STARVING IT WITHOUT KNOWING
Your stomach is full.
Your brain is tired.
And somehow, you blame yourself.
“Why can't I concentrate?”
“Why am I forgetting things?”
“Why am I reading this page for the fifth time and still remembering nothing?”
“Why do I feel mentally exhausted?”
Before you call yourself lazy, stop.
Your brain may be hungry.
And no, I'm not telling you to grab a meat pie because your brain needs food.
I'm talking about something deeper.
YOUR BRAIN DOESN'T ONLY NEED FOOD. IT NEEDS THE RIGHT KIND OF FUEL.
Think about your phone.
If you have 5% battery, you won't expect it to run smoothly for the entire day.
Now imagine trying to study for six hours, work all day, make important decisions, deal with stress and still function normally while barely eating or surviving on snacks.
Your brain is also using energy.
It is constantly working—even while you're sitting quietly.
Thinking.
Remembering.
Learning.
Planning.
Controlling movement.
Processing everything happening around you.
And it needs nutrients to keep doing its job.
“BUT I EAT EVERY DAY!”
I know.
The question isn't:
“Do you eat?”
The better question is:
“What are you feeding yourself?”
Because there's a difference between filling your stomach and nourishing your body.
You can eat plenty of food and still have a diet that lacks variety.
A plate loaded with highly processed foods may leave you feeling full, but fullness isn't the same thing as good nutrition.
Your brain benefits from a varied diet containing foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds and whole grains.
Not glamorous.
Not expensive “brain pills.”
Just real food and variety.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT EGG YOU UNDERESTIMATE.
You probably have one sitting in your kitchen right now.
You fry it.
You boil it.
You add it to noodles.
You put it beside bread.
Then you move on with your life.
But eggs provide protein and several important nutrients, including choline, which plays a role in normal brain and nervous-system function.
So no, an egg isn't going to magically turn you into Einstein.
But it can absolutely be part of a nutritious diet.
And here's the interesting part:
The problem isn't usually one food. It's the pattern.
Your brain doesn't need one magical food.
It needs consistent nourishment.
AND THEN YOU DRINK COFFEE TO “WAKE YOUR BRAIN.”
You slept for four hours.
Skipped breakfast.
Drank coffee.
Got hungry.
Drank another coffee.
By afternoon, you're surviving on caffeine and vibes.
Please…
Your brain is not a phone you can charge with an energy drink.
Caffeine can temporarily increase alertness, but it isn't a replacement for sleep or proper nutrition.
Sometimes your body isn't asking for another cup.
It's asking:
“Can we please eat something?”
WAIT… YOU FORGOT WATER TOO?
You're trying to concentrate.
Your head feels heavy.
You're tired.
You reach for your phone.
Scroll.
Scroll.
Scroll.
Then you complain:
“I don't know what's wrong with me.”
Meanwhile, when was the last time you drank water?
Hydration is one of those boring things we ignore until our body reminds us.
Your brain and the rest of your body need adequate fluids to function normally.
So before you declare that your brain has resigned from your body…
Drink some water.
BUT HERE'S THE PART PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO HEAR…
You can eat well and still struggle if you're constantly exhausted.
SLEEP MATTERS.
Your brain needs sleep.
Not “I'll sleep after I finish scrolling.”
Not “I'll sleep when everything is done.”
Not “Five hours is enough for me.”
If you're constantly depriving yourself of sleep, don't be surprised when concentration, memory, mood and mental performance start suffering.
Your brain needs time to recover.
SO, IS YOUR BRAIN HUNGRY?
Maybe the question isn't whether your stomach is empty.
Maybe it's whether you've been giving your brain what it needs to function well.
Next time you feel mentally drained, ask yourself:
Have I eaten properly?
Have I had enough water?
Have I slept enough?
Have I been eating a variety of nutritious foods?
Am I expecting too much from an exhausted body?
Because sometimes, the solution isn't to push harder.
Sometimes…
you need to pause and take care of the person doing all the pushing.
Your brain has carried you through every exam, every heartbreak, every stressful day, every late night and every difficult decision you've ever made.
Feed it. Hydrate it. Rest it. Protect it.
Because you only get one brain.
🥼 WHITE COAT DIARIES
We often wait for our bodies to scream before we listen.
But health isn't only about treating sickness.
It's also about paying attention to the small signals before they become bigger problems.
So the next time your brain feels foggy, your concentration disappears and you find yourself saying,
“Something is wrong with me,”
don't be so quick to blame yourself.
Maybe you're not lazy.
Maybe you're overwhelmed.
Maybe you're dehydrated.
Maybe you're sleep-deprived.
Maybe you've been neglecting your nutrition.
Listen to your body.
Because sometimes, the body whispers long before it screams.
And sometimes…
your brain isn't failing you.
It's simply asking you to take better care of it.
This is White Coat Diaries.
Where health meets real life.
