YOU WAKE UP, OPEN YOUR EYES… AND THEY FEEL GLUED SHUT! πŸ‘€

Have you ever woken up in the morning, tried to open your eyes, and discovered that they feel sticky or almost glued together?

You clean them and continue with your day.

But have you ever stopped to ask, β€œWhy does this happen?”

That little substance around your eyes may look disgusting, but sometimes it is simply part of what happens while you sleep. However, when the discharge becomes excessive or comes with other symptoms, your eyes may be trying to tell you something.

Let's break it down.

THAT LITTLE β€œSLEEP” IN YOUR EYES MAY BE NORMAL

Your eyes naturally produce tears, mucus, and oils. These help keep the eyes moist and protect them from dust and other small particles.

During the day, you blink many times. Every blink helps spread tears over the surface of your eyes and moves unwanted material away.

But when you sleep, you stop blinking.

While you are sleeping peacefully, mucus, oil, tears, dead skin cells, and tiny particles can collect around your eyelids.

By morning, some of this material has dried, leaving the familiar crust or sticky substance around your eyes.

A small amount is usually normal.

BUT WHAT IF THERE IS A LOT OF DISCHARGE?

This is where you need to pay attention.

If your eyes suddenly produce much more discharge than usual, especially thick yellow or green discharge, it could be linked to an eye infection.

An infection may also cause redness, itching, swelling, watering, or pain.

Some eye infections can spread from one person to another. This is why you should wash your hands regularly and avoid sharing towels, face cloths, pillowcases, or eye makeup.

And please don't keep touching or rubbing your eyes.

COULD ALLERGIES BE THE PROBLEM?

Absolutely.

If your eyes are very itchy, watery, red, or swollen, allergies may be responsible.

Dust, smoke, pollen, some cosmetics, and other substances can irritate the eyes.

The problem is that itchy eyes can make you want to rub them constantly. But rubbing can make the irritation worse and may introduce germs into your eyes.

DON'T FORGET DRY EYES

Here's something that may surprise you: dry eyes can also cause sticky or stringy mucus.

Your eyes need enough tears to stay comfortable and healthy. When they become too dry, they can feel gritty, burning, irritated, or tired.

Spending many hours staring at your phone or computer can contribute because you may blink less while concentrating on the screen.

Taking regular breaks and remembering to blink can help reduce eye strain.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GET YOUR EYES CHECKED? 🚨

A little eye discharge in the morning is usually not a reason to panic.

But don't ignore it if you have severe eye pain, strong redness, swelling, sensitivity to light, persistent or excessive discharge, blurred vision, or any sudden change in your vision.

Sudden loss of vision or severe eye pain needs urgent medical attention.

Also, don't use somebody else's eye drops or random medication because they had a similar problem. Not every eye problem has the same cause, so the treatment may be different.

SO, SHOULD YOU WORRY ABOUT STICKY EYES?

Not always.

If it is just a small amount when you wake up and your eyes feel normal afterward, it is usually part of the normal way your eyes protect and clean themselves.

But if the discharge keeps returning during the day, becomes excessive, changes significantly, or comes with pain, redness, swelling, or vision problems, don't simply ignore it.

Your eyes are precious. They help you read, work, recognize the people you love, and experience the world around you.

Take care of them.

Wash your hands before touching your eyes. Keep your face and eyelids clean. Avoid rubbing your eyes, and seek professional help when something doesn't look or feel right.

Sometimes your body whispers before it screams. Learn to listen. πŸ‘€
