Thanksgiving is one of the greatest responsibilities and privileges we have as believers. It goes beyond thanking God only when things are going well or when we receive something from Him. Thanksgiving is a reflection of our understanding of who God is and our recognition of His faithfulness in our lives.
One thing I have come to realize is that it is easy to remember God when we need something from Him, but sometimes we forget to pause and appreciate Him for the things He has already done. We are often quick to present our requests before God, but slow to look back and acknowledge His goodness.
Ingratitude is a dangerous place for any believer to remain. When we fail to recognize God's goodness, we gradually begin to take His blessings for granted. Not being grateful is not just an attitude problem; it is a spiritual issue because everything we have and everything we are comes from Him.
A thankful heart attracts the hand of God because it shows humility. It recognizes that our achievements, our strength, our opportunities, and even our lives are not products of our abilities alone. Thanksgiving reminds us that we are completely dependent on God.
The Bible says in Psalm 92:1-2, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High: To show forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night.”
God desires our thanksgiving. Prayer and supplication are important parts of our relationship with Him, but thanksgiving should never be neglected. A relationship where we only ask and never appreciate is not a complete relationship.
A grateful heart is a heart that continues to move forward. Thanksgiving helps us value what God has already placed in our hands while trusting Him for what is yet to come.
Why Should We Give Thanks?
1. Thanksgiving Helps Us Appreciate The Fulfilment Of God's Promises
Whenever God fulfills His promises in our lives, thanksgiving should be our response. Like the Israelites who praised God after their victory over Pharaoh in Exodus 15:11, we must always remember to return all glory to Him.
Every testimony is a reminder of God's faithfulness. What we sometimes call “luck” is often the evidence of God's mercy and kindness.
2. Thanksgiving Is A Debt We Owe God
In Luke 17:17-19, Jesus questioned the nine lepers who received healing but failed to return and give thanks. Only one came back to appreciate Him.
This teaches us that receiving a blessing is not enough; we must also have the heart to acknowledge the One who gave it.
God is not only interested in blessing us; He desires that we remain connected to Him through gratitude.
3. Thanksgiving Helps Preserve Our Blessings
A blessing received does not automatically mean a blessing preserved. Thanksgiving keeps our hearts humble and reminds us that God remains the source of everything we have.
Many times, the greatest danger is not receiving blessings but allowing those blessings to make us forget the One who gave them.
4. Thanksgiving Multiplies Our Blessings
In John 6:1-11, Jesus gave thanks before multiplying the five loaves and two fishes. This shows us that thanksgiving creates an atmosphere for multiplication.
Praise is always the right response, especially when we do not know what to do. When something is placed in the hands of a thankful person, God can turn little into much.
Nothing truly runs out in the hands of someone who understands thanksgiving because God is never limited or exhausted.
5. Thanksgiving Perfects Our Blessings
In Luke 17:15-19, the leper who returned to give thanks received something beyond healing — he received wholeness.
Thanksgiving helps us recognize that the blessing is not just about what we receive, but also about maintaining a relationship with the Giver.
The Danger Of Ingratitude
An ungrateful heart can slowly lose sight of God's goodness. When gratitude disappears, our hearts can become disconnected from His presence and we begin to focus more on what we lack rather than what God has already done.
We must learn to give thanks not only privately but also publicly. Public thanksgiving gives glory to God and reminds others of His faithfulness.
We must be careful never to take the glory that belongs to God because the glory that belongs to Him can never truly belong to man (Acts 12:23).
A thankful heart will always find reasons to praise God. Regardless of the season we find ourselves in, there is always something to thank Him for.
Thanksgiving is not just an action; it is a lifestyle.
When we remember God's goodness and choose gratitude, we position ourselves to experience more of His presence, guidance, and blessings.
We owe God thanks.
