THE PRICE OF GREED

THE PRICE OF GREED

One of the hidden threats of life is greed. It starts with the desire of having more, but when the desire possesses the heart it can ruin relationships, opportunities, peace and even the person who experiences the desire. Greed makes people believe that they lack sufficient resources and that they need more power, more recognition, more money, or more material goods to make them happy.

It's ok to work hard and want to be successful. The issue arises when the need for more outweighs the values of honesty, kindness and contentment. A greedy person can lose his friends for money, betray his friend for a profit, and steal what is not his because he desires it more.

People can also be rendered blind by greed. For one, there may be a business partner who wants to get a larger profit and ends up in a situation where he/she cheats. A person can be a falser to get an inheritance. Others might turn down an offer of assistance because they fear that they will lose what they have. They may seem to be profitable right now, but if it's a situation of greed, there's always a cost involved.

But at times, it is the loss of trust that comes if the price is too high. When trust has been lost because someone has opted for money over integrity, it can be very hard to be trusted again. Friends can turn their backs, family can become estranged and business partners can refuse to be associated with that individual again.

Another way greed takes peace is by stealing it. The one who is always seeking for more may never find time to enjoy what he has in his hands. They may often feel insecure and frustrated by others who might seem to be richer, more successful, or more influential. They live their lives in bondage to their desires rather than enjoying life.

There are many examples in history and in day-to-day life of individuals who accumulatively acquired a great deal of wealth but lost everything that really mattered. Others recouped some of their losses and amassed wealth. Others became powerful but were not respected. Others got what they desired, but not happiness. This is to teach us that, success without contentment is another poverty.

Greed is a very bad thing as the Bible says. In Luke 12:15, Jesus told us to “watch out!” Watch out for every sort of covetousness: “Life is not about plenty of possessions.” With this in mind, we should all remember that money in our bank accounts and the number of things we own are not a measure of the worth of life.

Contentment is not about not trying to get better. It is filled with gratitude, for those greater things that are to come. It is about understanding that money is a means, not an end; possessions are blessings, not the goal; and success is worthwhile when it is earned in an honest way.

GREED ultimately offers a lot, but demands much more. It can provide a temporary relief, but can cause loneliness, remorse, fractured relationships and an empty heart.

Wealth is not just about more. The true wealth is to have peace, fellowship, a clear conscience and a heart to give. So let's go for success, but not to become the slaves of greed. Let us strive, be truthful, be generous and be appreciative.

For sometimes the cost of being greedy is a loss of the things that money can't buy.
