A Delivery of Trust
Kemi was a fashion designer, fashion coach, and clothing dealer for both men and women.
She was very intentional about her business. She never failed her clients and was always on time with her deliveries. This made her clients continue to patronize her and refer her to others.
One fateful day, her delivery guy failed her, and she had only an hour left to deliver a package to one of her clients. She also had about five different deliveries to make that day, but she was running out of time.
She came out of her house, weary and confused, still dialing her delivery guy's number, but it wasn't connecting.
A cab driver came along to drop off a passenger. He noticed Kemi and how disturbed she looked, so he decided to move closer to her.
"Hello, I'm so sorry to disturb you. You look worried. What's the matter?" he asked.
Kemi narrated her problem to him, and he offered to help. She was reluctant at first, but she eventually accepted his offer.
In less than forty minutes, he delivered the first package and offered to help her deliver the rest.
At the end of the day, Kemi met with the cab driver and appreciated him. She decided to take his number and asked if he could help her with her daily deliveries.
He happily agreed.
"Who doesn't want money?" he joked.
"I know you would pay me," he added.
"Definitely, I will pay you," Kemi replied.
They both laughed and parted ways.
The cab driver's name was Tunde. He ran deliveries for people and was also hired by individuals who needed transportation services. He was diligent with his work and planned to build a small logistics company for himself before settling down in marriage.
Tunde found it difficult to trust people, so he always took his time before trusting anyone. His father had died of a heart attack after his business partner betrayed him and fled with over ten million naira.
This experience had prevented Tunde from partnering with anyone. Instead, he had chosen to build his brand from scratch all by himself.
Tunde started handling Kemi's deliveries. He made sure they were delivered on time, often even earlier than scheduled. He was doing this with his car, unlike Kemi's former dispatch rider.
Kemi's clientele began to multiply because her deliveries were always on time. She was reliable, trustworthy, and her fashion sense was spectacular.
One day, Tunde was robbed. His car was not taken, but all of Kemi's packages were carted away. The stolen packages were worth over five million naira.
Tunde himself was not worth up to two hundred thousand naira at the time. He was completely confused.
How would he face Kemi? Where would he get the money to replace everything that had been stolen?
He summoned the courage to go to Kemi.
Kemi was furious because she was already running at a deficit at the time. She became extremely angry and demanded that Tunde pay her back.
She accused him of robbing her and threatened to involve the police if he didn't pay her the money.
Tunde had no choice but to start running around to raise five million naira to settle the debt.
He had to sell his car for four million naira just to make sure he paid Kemi. He borrowed the remaining one million naira and went to her house.
Kemi was surprised that he had raised the money so quickly. She appreciated him, and Tunde left.
A few weeks later, Kemi called Tunde to help her with another delivery. She had been struggling to handle her deliveries because of what had happened.
Tunde told her he couldn't come.
"Why?" Kemi asked.
But Tunde said nothing and ended the call.
Kemi was disturbed and curious about why he had declined her request. She wondered if it was because of the way she had spoken to him when the packages were stolen.
She just couldn't figure out what had happened.
The following day, she found a way to visit him. Fortunately, she met him at home.
She was surprised.
"Why are you not working today?" she asked.
Tunde remained silent.
Kemi became confused and started apologizing for the way she had spoken to him.
"I'm not angry with you," Tunde said. "We are cool. After all, it was my fault."
After much pleading from Kemi, he finally told her why he had declined her call.
"I had to sell my car and borrow one million naira to settle the debt. Now, I have nothing to work with. I'm just here trying to figure out my next move."
Kemi was deeply moved. Tears filled her eyes, and she left the house immediately.
A few weeks later, Kemi arrived at Tunde's house with a car.
Tunde welcomed her and began to tease her.
"Kemi, your car is beautiful! This is not just a car; this is a machine! When did you buy it, and how much did it cost?" he asked, excitement written all over his face.
Kemi smiled.
"It's not my car. It's yours."
Tunde laughed.
"Stop playing, jare."
"I'm serious," she replied.
Tunde's smile faded.
"How? I don't understand."
"After I left here a few weeks ago, I couldn't forgive myself for making you sell your car, your only means of livelihood. One of my clients reached out to me and told me he wanted to sell one of his cars. Thankfully, it was affordable, so I decided to get it for you. I just wanted to make it up to you."
She paused.
"I'm really sorry for making you go through everything you went through."
Tunde was speechless. Tears began to flow down his cheeks.
Kemi also began to cry.
Tunde appreciated her kindness, and together, they went out in the car.
A few weeks later, they were back in business and doing really well. But something else had changed between them.
Their friendship had grown into something deeper.
They had fallen in love, and their love grew stronger and stronger as the months passed.
Sometimes, life brings people together through unexpected circumstances.
For Kemi and Tunde, it started with a delivery.
But what was delivered that day was more than a package.
It was trust, kindness, and eventually, love.
